Welcome to the Club History page of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA)!
The VSDCA has a rich history that dates back to a time before its inception. In Melbourne, a first and second grade District Cricket Competition, featuring a promotion and relegation system, had been in place since the 1906/07 season. However, this format encountered several challenges, prompting the Victorian Cricket Association to propose a new structure. This led to the creation of separate District and Sub-District competitions.
A pivotal meeting on August 24, 1908, marked the official formation of the VSDCA. Chaired by Lt. Colonel W.B. Pleasants, representatives from each of the proposed Sub-District clubs convened and reached a unanimous decision to establish the Sub-District Cricket Associations distinct from the District Associations.
The founding clubs of the Sub-District Association were Brighton, Caulfield, Coburg, Elsternwick, Hawthorn, Malvern, Port Melbourne, and Williamstown. Today, with the exception of Hawthorn, these clubs continue to be vital and competitive members of the Sub-District league.
From its humble beginnings with just 8 clubs, the VSDCA has grown impressively. Now, it encompasses 32 clubs, which are spread across various sporting facilities, enhancing both on-field and off-field experiences.
Our association proudly supports 365 teams across these clubs, involving approximately 3,700 members. In addition to this, we have a thriving Umpires Association, which boasts nearly 150 members. This growth and expansion reflect the enduring passion and commitment to cricket within our community. Join us in celebrating the rich history and ongoing success of the VSDCA!
